July 17 marks the one year anniversary of John Lewis' Death. The CSRA Good Trouble Coalition will join in the nationwide Candlelight Vigil to demand passage of key voting rights reforms - the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood.

When: Saturday, July 17, 8:00 - 9:30
(Sundown is at 8:42PM; Darkness hits within 70-100 minutes)

Where: TBA

What: Bring flags, signs, banners, candles, battery-powered candles/tea lights, flashlights. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellant, and a chair if you need it.

Why: John Lewis marched and protested and suffered brutal beatings to help make the vote available to all citizens; President Lyndon B. Johnson introduced the Voting Rights Act of 1965 eight days after the young Lewis was clubbed on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala. In the years after, Lewis campaigned and lobbied and pressed to see that the right enshrined in that measure was translated into reality for millions who were disenfranchised. He made enormous progress — just not enough. We are gathering to honor his legacy and to demand a democracy that works for all the people. We want Congress to pass key voting rights reforms - the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood now, no excuses.
